it was a late night in late 2007 in tokyo when a group of scientists declared their experiment a success. after a long time with seeming endless money supplied from a very anonymous source, the scientists discovered that they had created a synthetic blood that could nourish. they thought they were providing this synthetic blood for the benefit of medicine, but they were wrong. in 2008, the anonymous backer of the japanese scientists came out with his blood substitute, which he called "tru blood", selling it as a synthetic food source for vampires so that they wouldn't have to prey on humans. later on in that same year, vampires started making themselves known to the public, swearing that they weren't dangerous and that all they wanted were equal rights. no one expected that a science experiment in tokyo would affect the small town of renier on the coast of mississippi. now a community that's biggest problem was the ole miss/bama rivalry has bigger problems on their hands, like the most profitable business in town - the new casino - being run by vampires and suddenly having to worry about whether they were going to be safe at night or if their town is going to be washed in the blood.
