Twenty years ago the land of Ossero was ravaged by war between the
oppressive Osserian Empire and a rebel group dubbed the Rifters.
Magic, which had once been prevalent in Ossero, had been outlawed
by those unable to wield it themselves and for nearly a hundred
years technology reigned supreme. Tired of the tyrannical rule of
Leopold Desmarius, men and women of all ages and creed gathered
together to fight back against the empire and restore freedom to the
people. The empire accused them of causing a rift in society, in
government, and in religion and thus they adopted the name
‘Rifters’ in lieu of their cause.
After five years war between these Rifters and the Empire a final
battle (which brought the great iron fortress, the Infidus Diabolus,
crashing down) gave the Rifters and everyone who fought alongside
them the victory they so desperately sought. The Rifters took control
of the government renaming it the Skyland Alliance, and put into
place reforms that would give the people of Ossero their freedoms
back. The people were now able to openly practice that which had
been done only in secret for centuries – magic.
Not everyone was pleased with the results of the war. There are still
many self-proclaimed Imperialist who would do anything to see the
Empire restored and the exiled heir, Emperor Leopold’s son, returned
to the Osserian throne. There are many more who heatedly oppose
the readmission of magic into Osserian society and protest the
opening of the Academy of Magic claiming it is a slap in the face to all
that Ossero stands for. With tensions running high, the Skyland
Alliance growing corrupt, and ghosts of the past darkening the
horizon it is only a matter of time before the people of Ossero find
themselves at war once more.
