Sebastian had come awake slowly, having felt a disembodied hand tracing its way down his unclothed spine as he lay on his stomach, his head buried underneath his feather pillow. Annoyance clouded his mind and he grumbled to himself before trying to snuggle back into the soft linen that lay around him, covering him in its warm loveliness. And yet, the hand was persistent, crawling down his back even as he attempted to shift it off.
“What is it, your Grace?” A woman’s voice, harsh in the blanket of tranquil shadows that unclothed them at this early hour of the morning. Which girl was it again? Sebastian absently turned his head in a casual manner towards the female voice, hoping to catch a glimpse of her hair colour or face in these dark twilight hours so he could ascertain who was sharing his bed. Nothing. She was shrouded in darkness; nothing more than an amorphous blob that was wrapped within his sheets. The hand was becoming persistent now, almost scrabbling willy nilly across his muscles.
“Get your hand off me, madame. It’s interrupting my sleep.” Sebastian’s voice was gruff and cold, annoyance seeping through the normally chocolate tones.
“My hands are by my side, your Grace.” She sounded confused, and yet somehow hopeful, as though he was trying to play some sort of game with her. Did he want her to put her hand on his back? Suddenly eager, she reached over and slid her slim fingers over his ribcage and towards his spine, only to find something already occupying the space.
Sebastian was just attempting to fall back into sleep when a terribly piercing female shriek burst into his eardrums, filling his stone room with noise. He jumped, startled by the sudden noise, throwing his bedcovers off. What was making her so frightened? His hand went to the bejewelled dagger that lay tucked into the side of the mattress, his sleep-heavy hands closed around it’s hilt just as he felt something slap at his back. Immediately he was on his guard and he sprang out of the bed, just as a guard started to bang on the door.
“Your Grace! Is everything all right?”
Sebastian didn’t answer, still unsure of what exactly had just happened. He looked over at the other side of the bed to see the vague outline of a nude woman pressing herself against one of the tapestries on his wall. Abstractly, he suddenly remembered who this girl was and sighed to himself. He had better at least attempt to be kind to her; she had been a very willing student just hours before and he had enjoyed it immensely.
“What is it, love? Did something frighten you?”
Realising that there were no assassins in his room, he stalked around the bed to stand next to the young woman, placing a hand on the back of her neck in an attempt to soothe her.
“It...” She suddenly faltered, feeling his rough hand on his alabaster skin send shivers down her spine. “It was a spider, your Grace. I’m sorry.”
Sebastian suddenly felt a little queasy; it must have been a very large arachnid if he had thought it was a hand that was on his back. He didn’t like any sort of small and annoying creatures like that; spiders, moths, beetles... Not that he would show it of course.
“Your Grace!?”
The banging on the door was becoming insistent now, and the guard’s voice seemed a little nervous through the muffling of the door. He obviously didn’t want to be the one to discover the Duke assassinated when he had been on watch. He shouldn’t have let him lock the door. Everyone knew that Sebastian was an atypical Casanova, and he knew better than to be indiscreet about his nightly activites. The guard was seriously beginning to fret, when suddenly the door was unlocked and opened slightly to reveal the tall and almost painfully handsome royal in the slim opening.
“Everything’s fine. Spider attack.”
The guard was confused, but he heard a distinctly female giggling from inside the room at the sound of the Duke’s teasing; and he struggled not to grimace. Jealousy flared within him that Sebastian was so easily able to seduce such important women; but he knew better than to show it.
“Well met, sir.”
But Sebastian had already closed the door, and by the sound of the increased giggling within the room; had already returned to his female companion, sleep forgotten. He would never learn.
