With a population of only five-hundred and forty-six and out of the way of .. pretty much anything, Palmyra, Nebraska is another rural town that the rest of the country doesn't really care or know exists. The one thing that gives it a map dot is the Waverly Horse Ranch a few miles out of town, a family-owned breeding farm of top-quality, national show-winning Quarter Horses and one of the few US breeders of the rare American Cream Draft.
But their impressive show record and interesting breed choices aren't the most interesting part about their ranch.
Waverly Horse Ranch is home to one of the original work-rehabilitation programs for former inmates, recently paroled or as it is now called 'supervised release'. They offer stable work and good references to those who will give them an honest day's work and retain good behaviour around the other workers and animals.
Obviously, though, the influx of former convicts has brought a bit of a hesitant change to the adjacent rural little town, what with some of these new families moving in, and meshing with the otherwise conservative populace of Palmyra. Some of the residents are kind and accepting, but on the other hand there are many of the opposite spectrum as well, saying they can't bring anything good to their community, and they want them out.
